Friday Bits and Bobs (Oct 21)
A grab-bag of things newsy, interesting, inspirational, or just fun
In today’s end-of-week post, I am just going to share some wildlife pictures I’ve taken over the years. Some are cute and some are just of amazing creatures, and some are in my backyard, some far afield. Hope you enjoy my little visual slice of the wildish world for a few minutes today.
An Eastern Flying Squirrel in a bluebird box in my former western NC back yard. Awwwwwwwww.
Some tiny ants (no idea what kind) on a hydrangea.
Two Crimson-Rumped Toucanets in the cloud forest of the Ecuadorean Andes.
A Booted Racket-Tail hummingbird, also in Ecuador. How crazy are those fluffy socks!?
This is also a booted racket-tail but looking up into the grey sky, so it came out as a silhouette. This photo had no editing except cropping.
Two pictures of a porcupine up an apple tree in Maine. I never realized how cute they are (though I imagine, quite a bit less cute if they are backing up towards you rapidly).
A pied wagtail in Ireland. A common backyard bird there, but almost exclusively only found in the UK and Ireland.
A lunar moth in western NC. I don’t have any scale in this picture, but this moth is about the size of your hand - huge!
And finally, a soaring gannet in Ireland. You can tell just by looking at them that these birds dive. To me it almost looks penguin-like, but with proper wings.
I hope to be getting into some more serious photography over the next year, so maybe we’ll have more pics here soon. Meanwhile, even just a few snapshots reveal what amazing and varied wildlife we have in our little spot in the universe.
Have a great weekend y’all.
They’re so cuuuuute.
Beautiful pictures - Thank you for sharing them all.
I saw my first Flying Squirrel two weeks ago - well caught it on my trail camera - so fascinating.
