In The Weeds!
Quite literally, since coming back from a month on the road, the weeds have overtaken our patio, (and path, and….everywhere). But unbeknownst to them, a whoopin’ is coming…in the form of vinegar and salt, and a little dawn detergent.
(On a side note, how is it that sub-freezing temperatures kill everything except patio weeds? And is it wrong that I sometimes secretly celebrate their greenness in the midst of the greige-ness of winter nature?)
Yep, winter is almost here for some of us, and already very much here for the rest of the US. (Looking at you, Buffalo!). The skies, the grass, the tree branches have taken on that opaque-quality that makes it seem as if you’re looking though a tupperware lid.
But I love the light at the this time of year. A little less ‘in-your-face’ so to speak. And in my home office at least, there is more indirect light than when the leaves are all on the giant poplar outside the window (which I also love). Even my violets and orchids are blooming happily on the desk. Plus I can see the mountains until the leaves re-open again. I looked out the window today and a bright red cardinal was posing just perfectly in the midst of the pale grey branches.
While I don’t adore taking the puppies out at this time of year, there are new views and hues to enjoy everywhere.
Perhaps the patio weeds are with me in enjoying this time of year as well.
Metaphorically, there are also a few weeds to contend with! I got sucked into a much deeper exploration of a few topics I have planned for this week, and got myself into a writing quagmire. (I know you know how that goes).
So, instead of posting a muddy, weed-strewn post or two, I’m taking another morning to sort out my prose! Hopefully, by the time I send out the newsletter, it will be snappy and sensible: more vinegar and salt, and fewer weeds….if you see what I mean.
Meanwhile, I hope your Thanksgivings were lovely (or at least tolerable!), and that you’re not yet tired of holiday music and leftovers!
