It’s hot on the East Coast of the US this weekend, and for most of Europe, and the Southwest US, and the middle….ok so there’s a lot of heat out there right now. So, given the general toastiness, please consider a couple of additional tiny weekend tasks to help look after our birdy friends.
They should have a decent amount of food at this time of year, so feeding them is fine if you want to enjoy their company at the feeder, but more necessary for them is water.
If you can, please find an old plant drip tray, or a shallow pan, or even a dog bowl, and create a little space for birds to find some water. Keep it shallow (you can put rocks or twigs in it so birds don’t have to get wet), and if possible, change it every day to keep it cool and fresh (and to stop mosquitoes breeding). Try to keep the water in the shade too if you can, and if you have cats, make sure the kitties can’t lay in wait for your thirsty wildlife.
Our bird baths are truly the hotspot in our yard at this time of year, and the squirrels and chipmunks will appreciate it too. It’s not only us that needs to stay hydrated when it gets hot, so if you can put out and maintain a little source of water, you’d definitely be the hero for the wilder parts of your neighborhood this summer. Plus you might get to meet some interesting new neighbors!
Done... We have the river too so I sit and watch them bird bath at the edge!
Agree Anne! We always make sure our birdies have lots of water but this time of year is even more important. Plus they are so cute watching them drink! ❤️
